State award for Terrace Bowling

WITH more than 70 years behind them, members of Raymond Terrace Bowling Club have always prided themselves on being more than a sporting venue, but an essential part of the local community.

So, when the club was approached by Port Stephens Community Care (PSCC) to help with the Meals on Wheels following fire damage to their premises, club management was eager to cooperate.

Within two days of the building being declared unsafe, all services run by PSCC were back to normal, thanks largely to the generosity of the Raymond Terrace community and in particular its bowling club.

"There were several offers of help, but the club gladly offered temporary use of its kitchen to allow our members to prepare Meals on Wheels," said Carolyn Mills (PSCC events & marketing manager).

"We were unable to offer the club any firm time frame due to the extent of damage caused by the explosion [which stretched to six months], but that did not deter the club’s generosity.

"The meals recipients were not inconvenienced in any way and the service was able to proceed with barely a hiccup."

The kind gesture prompted PSCC to nominate the club for an ACS (Aged & Community Services) 2009 State Award for Excellence. Last week the club as rewarded with the State Award for Industry Supporter for 2009.

"In our opinion, there could not have been a more deserving winner of the ACS State Award than the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club," said Mrs Mills.
