Junior hockey scores a goal in Bay
NELSON Bay Junior Hockey, playing under the auspices of the Port Stephens Hockey Association, enjoyed one of its most successful season in 2009, culminating in a high quality finals and presentation day held on Saturday.
Around 80 players participated in four memorable games contested at the Salamander Sporting Complex hockey fields in front of large crowds of supporters.
The club also runs regular Saturday morning minkey session for the youngsters.
Club president Mark Wagland said player numbers in all age groups were up, with the club fielding four teams in both the Under 11 and Under 15 competitions.
“In addition to the extra numbers we have witnessed a major improvement in the standard of play, which was exemplified in Saturday’s finals,” he said.
“It is a credit to the coaching staff and players, particularly from the Under 15s, stepping up to a whole new level.”
The Under 15 grand final was keenly contested, with the Hot Shots emerging winners over the Prime Movers by the barest of margins, 4-3, while the Barracudas downed the Warriors in the play-off.
Coincidentally, the teams in the under 11 competition finished in the same four positions, with Hot Shots downing Prime Movers and Barracudas defeating Warriors.
Mr Wagland said plans are afoot to conduct a pre-season indoor competition during the summer, with Tomaree High the likely venue.
New and current players are welcome to join the competition.
“The club is going from strength to strength in both juniors and seniors, where this season we fielded five teams instead of four.”
