PLANNING and executing a unit level deployment was just one of the many objective achieved by members of RAAF Base Williamtown’s 381ECSS unit during Exercise Night Hawk.

The exercise, conducted from August 16 – 28 at Singleton, was designed to build upon section level training and the Military Skills Training Program to further prepare the unit personnel for expeditionary deployments.

XO 381ECSS SQNLDR William Black said in addition to the deployment, personnel were also engaged in establishing and sustaining a Combat Support Element by providing the necessary combat service support to enable the successful and efficient conduct of air operations.

“They also took part in conducting a Ground Combat Refresher Course and Conduct Convoy operations,” he said.

“Considerable time was dedicated to developing new, realistic and demanding exercise scenarios to provide all members with the opportunity to be tested and learn in a field training environment.

“All capability bricks (Command and Control, Fire, Secpol, Log, Catering, Admin, MWD’s, AFENG, Comms, MEOMS and Medical) were exercised and all identified training objectives achieved.”

The exercise involved approximately 100 personnel, predominantly from 381ECSS, with support from 2EHS, 1AOSS, airfield engineering and communication support. The field component of the exercise was conducted predominantly at Singleton Training Area, with preliminary ground defence training (two days) at Taree.

The exercise included a convoy move RAAF Williamtown to Armidale, Taree and eventually Singleton. The route combined approximately 1,000km of single/double lane highway roads with 200km of hilly and mountainous terrain.

“The convoy route and conditions provided all drivers with effective driver training outcomes and experience,” said SQNLDR Black. “It was a successful exercise, with identified training objectives met and the lessons learned will be incorporated into 381ECSS’s expeditionary training routine for future training activities.”
