RAAF defends title
DEFENDING tug-of-war champions, RAAF Base Williamtown, have thrown out a challenge to all-comers at next weekend’s Clans of the Coast festival to take place at Tomaree No. 1 sports ground.
The RAAF team of eight has been in training as talk of both the Army and Police plan to mount their own assault on the crown of ‘the strongest team in the Bay’.
The action will be just part of a fabulous festival planned for the second annual ‘Clans’, featuring a greater emphasis this year on kids activities, being held on Saturday, September 19.
Former Port Stephens Mayor and proud Scotsman Ron Swan anticipates between 2-3,000 people to be entertained by the pipe bands, dance groups and huge range of activities on a fun-filled day the whole family can enjoy.
Some of the kids events include a Shoot-the-hoop (netball) contest, kick at soccer target and egg toss, with prizes and trophies on offer.
“There’s something for everyone this year, including the Scottish and Celtic dancing, singing groups, stalls and ancient battle re-enactments,” Ron said.
Gates will be open on Saturday from 8:30am till 4.30pm; entry $7 adults; $5 pensioners; $2 kids under 15 - $12 family.
On Friday, September 18, the "Highlanders" will perform at Nelson Bay Diggers Club, starting at 6:30pm.
The Ceilidh - which will involve a sit down meal, address to the Haggis ceremony, Newcastle RSL Pipe Band, highland dancing - will take place on Saturday night at Nelson Bay Diggers.
Then, the festival will be wrapped up on Sunday, September 20, with the Kirkin Of The Tartans featuring the Ingleburn Pipe Band at D'Albora Marina, Nelson Bay at 10am.
