2 times winner
RAAF Base Williamtown athlete SQNLDR Richard Gardiner has taken out the prestigious Defence ‘Athlete of the Year’ award for the second time.
Having won the award in 2006/07, the Tactical Fighter Systems Programs Office (TFSPO) member has repeated the feat to be crowned 2008/09 winner.
SQNLDR Gardiner was recognised after another season of achievements which culminated in the recent City2Surf where he was first Defence runner home in the time of 46mins 50secs for a top 50 finish.
He also led the Defence contingent home in the 2008 14km Sydney race, a feat he replicated in last year’s Gold Coast Marathon.
He was also leading Defence athlete in the 2009 10km race and part of the leading 2009 State Teams event.
SQNLDR Gardiner was joined by RAAF Williamtown teammates SQNLDR Craig Benson (50:29), SQNLDR Jack Absolon (73:01) and WGCDR Tim Horton (73:20) to claim victory in the City2Surf masters male team category.
